October: A Month of Reflection, Gratitude, and Celebration

Every October, I am reminded of my journey with breast cancer. This month not only honors survivors and those currently battling the disease but also pays tribute to those we’ve lost. For me, October holds an even deeper significance—it’s the month I welcomed my beautiful daughter, Grace, just three days before my birthday, while navigating the early stages of my diagnosis and treatment. It’s a time for reflection, gratitude, and celebration.

Thirteen years ago, I experienced three life-changing events in one year: I got married, was diagnosed with breast cancer, and gave birth to my daughter. This exhilarating period was also filled with fear. I was unprepared for the whirlwind that followed Grace’s birth—doctor appointments for both of us, chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. Balancing care for my newborn and myself was extraordinarily challenging.

I was fortunate to have an incredible support system. My family, friends, and doctors rallied around me, allowing me to create many fond memories of Grace’s early months, despite my illness. She brought me joy and hope, fueling my fight against cancer. Her presence made me believe in my treatments and pushed me to overcome the “what-ifs” that haunted my mind.

Many people have told me they couldn’t endure cancer while raising a child. I believe it was Grace who helped me persevere. No one can truly prepare for the whirlwind of emotions that come with carrying a baby while facing illness. You push aside your fears and focus on creating the best environment for your child. There’s no guidebook for this journey; I searched for one! But instinct kicks in, driving you to find any semblance of normalcy—even when normal looks like burping a baby with a bald head.

Grace had colic and struggled with GERD, which was tough. Yet, she also said her first word at four months and started speaking in full sentences by nine months. These milestones inspired me to seek the brighter side of life and continue my fight. She still motivates me today.

Grace will be thirteen this year. My beautiful daughter, with her big eyes and long brown hair, embodies life itself. Each October, she reminds me to live fully and fight for what matters. I’m grateful for every year I get to witness her grow. I celebrate October not just as her birthday month, but as a time to honor the women who have battled breast cancer—those who have triumphed and those we’ve lost. Breast cancer is cruel and unforgiving, but despite my suffering, I received the greatest gift: my daughter.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I reflect on the pain I’ve endured while embracing the joy in my life. I am grateful for my amazing kid and excited for what lies ahead.

I’m proud to be part of Hope for Two, an organization that supports women navigating pregnancy while battling breast cancer. They connect expectant mothers with those who have walked the same path, offering guidance and support. I discovered them a year after having Grace, and I wish I’d found them sooner!
